I am not sure if there are any Italians protesting that "there is no such bread in Italy". But I guarantee, at least in Ferrara, there are! they sell this as a type of snack or quick lunch instead of panino in the local bars.
The fillings can vary; like in this version, I had canned mushroom, tomato sauce and mozzarella. In some places, they can put wurstel, prosciutto cotto, or tuna and onion (yummy!).
The dough is fluffy and soft, it is the same dough of pizzetta (small pizza) that is a must-have for any party. Pizzetta is also a popular afternoon snack for children. My daughter is a huge fan of pizzetta (well, actually, her father loves it too, i think most Italians love it. :p).
